Birds of a Feather
Bird photography has many challenges, but creating photographic artworks is a favourite passion of mine. The early morning chorus and warm light trigger a sense of anticipation and excitement I can not describe in words.
I love birds and I try to capture some of their unique beauty in these photographic artworks.
"A bird doesn't sing because it has an answer, it sings because it has a song." Maya Angelou
Around 10,000 species of bird inhabit the world, ranging from tiny hummingbirds up to huge ostriches. Australia is home to two of the largest flightless birds- the Emu and Southern Cassowary. Fossil records tell us that birds evolved from feathered dinosaurs. Primitive dinosaurs, similar to birds but unable to fly, have existed as long as 170 million years ago.
Ornithology is the branch of zoology devoted to studying birds.
Australia is known as the land of parrots and honeyeaters, but is also home to bowerbirds, megapodes and birds of paradise. It is quite possibly the birthplace of songbirds as many of these belong to families not found on other continents. Most of the world's cockatoos are Australian, and no continent other than South America has more parrots.
“In order to see birds it is necessary to become a part of the silence.”
~ Robert Lynd
